The resource curse, as manifested by an increased likelihood of conflict over rents, can be mitigated by institutions. Lei and Michaels find that discoveries of “giant” oil fields increase the likelihood of violent conflict, but they find no evidence that democratic institutions mitigate this risk. We test whether institutions mitigate the resource curse by reducing the risk of natural resource conflicts. Our results indicate that high quality economic institutions reduce the likelihood of territorial (separatist) conflicts following natural resource rent windfalls. Abstract . We study U.S. agricultural antidumping and countervailing duty cases from 1980 to 2005, and gauge the effectiveness of trade remedy law as a form of protection. The purpose is to measure the resulting investigation and trade diversion effects. Previous research on trade in manufactured products has shown that the domestic protection offered by AD and CV duties is largely offset by trade diversion. In contrast, we find that for agriculture, trade diversion is relatively unimportant. So AD and CVD cases are very effective forms of protection for U.S. agriculture. 相似文献

Focusing on travel survey data from Germany, this paper investigates the determinants of automobile travel, with the specific
aim of quantifying the effects of fuel prices and fuel economy. The analysis is predicated on the notion that car mileage
is a two-stage decision process, comprising the discrete choice of whether to own a car and the continuous choice of distance
traveled. To capture this process, we employ censored regression models consisting of Probit and OLS estimators, which allows
us to gauge the extent to which sample selectivity may bias the results. Our elasticity estimates indicate a significant positive
association between increased fuel economy and increased driving, and a significantly negative fuel-price elasticity, which
ranges between − 35% and − 41%. Taken together, these results suggest that fuel taxes are likely to be a more effective policy
measure in reducing emissions than fuel-efficiency standards.

This paper evaluates whether different labor market policy interventions taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have been effective in reducing its adverse impacts. We construct a database covering 165 countries and 39 labor market interventions grouped into four pillars: stimulating the economy and jobs (pillar 1); supporting enterprises, employment, and incomes (pillar 2); protecting workers (pillar 3); and social dialogue (pillar 4). The results revealed that measures taken under pillars 1, 2, and 3 have reduced the impacts of the pandemic on economic growth; measures under pillar 4 were significantly associated with reducing its impacts on employment and those under pillar 2 with reducing its impacts on working hours. 相似文献
